On 11  August 2020,  the Cabinet of Ministers (CoM) approved the draft regulation “Deposit System Operation Regulations” drafted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, which lay down the regulatory framework for the operation of the deposit system in order to launch it on 1 February 2022.

Latvia has a clear position and goal to move towards the creation of a unified multi-country institutionally integrated manager for the management of Rail Baltica railway route, while continuing the work on the design, construction and operation planning. Today's decision of the Cabinet of Ministers to transfer the Rail Baltica infrastructure management in Latvia at its initial stage to LLC Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas is an important step towards this goal, emphasized Tālis Linkaits, Minister for Transport today at the  press conference of the government.

On Tuesday, 11 August, the Cabinet of Ministers, based on the recommendations of epidemiologists, decided to slightly reduce certain Covid-19 restrictions, taking into account that the increase in the number of cases in Latvia is significantly smaller than in other European Union member states. However, close monitoring of morbidity rates will be continued so that a decision to return to stricter restrictions could be made promptly if the situation were to worsen.

A new remuneration model for medical practitioners has been developed by #GovLabLatvia - the Latvian Public Administration Innovation Laboratory - using the design thinking approach to solve a complex problem. Experts from the State Chancellery, doctors, nurses, employers in the healthcare sector, university lecturers, and healthcare policymakers took part in the think tanks.

On Wednesday, 15 July, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted several decisions in order to be able to collect information on both Latvian residents and foreigners entering Latvia more effectively, thus improving the ability of National Police to check compliance with self-isolation rules and of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to trace the spread of the Covid-19 infection. The need for third-country nationals to travel to Latvia to obtain visas and residence permits has also been reduced.

On Friday, 10 July, in a rapid response to the increase in the spread of the Covid-19 infection, the Cabinet of Ministers decided, during an emergency meeting, to partially renew certain restrictions in order to protect the public from a rapid spread of the infection. The government's decision is that of restricting the flow of visitors in public catering establishments.
